Melitta #4 Unbleached Coffee Filters

I keep a box of these next to the coffee maker because they solve a small problem cleanly and without fuss. They are for people who make drip coffee at home, want a simple paper filter that fits the standard basket, and do not want their morning cup to pick up any extra paper taste or stray grit. That is really the whole job here, and these do it well.
What I like most is how plain they are in the best way. The paper feels sturdy enough that it does not flop over when you open it, and it sits in the basket the way it should without me having to pinch and adjust it every time. The coffee drains at a steady pace, which matters more than people think. A filter that slows things down too much can make the brew taste muddy, and a flimsy one can tear or fold in on itself. These have been consistent for me. I can make a full pot, walk away, and come back to coffee that tastes like coffee.
The unbleached color is part of the appeal. I prefer that natural brown look anyway, and I like knowing there is one less extra step before the coffee gets made. They also compost, which is a nice bonus when you are throwing one away every morning and you would rather not feel bad about it. Small thing, but it adds up over time.
I use these on regular weekday mornings when I want coffee without thinking about it. If I am rushing around, packing a lunch, hunting for my keys, and trying to get the first cup poured before the day gets noisy, I want the filter to disappear into the routine. These do that. They fit the basket, they hold up under hot water, and they do not get in the way of the flavor. That is exactly what a filter should do.
The one thing I would mention is that paper filters are still paper filters. If you are used to a reusable metal basket or a cloth setup, this will feel more disposable and less hands-on, and you will keep buying more of them. That is not a flaw so much as the nature of the product, but it is worth saying. I also find that it helps to separate a few before you need them, because fresh boxes can cling together a little at the edges. Once they are in the basket, though, they behave fine.
Who this is for: anyone with a standard drip machine who wants an easy, reliable filter for everyday coffee. If you care about a clean cup more than you care about gimmicks, these make sense. If you only brew once in a while, a pack like this will last a good while. If you make coffee every day, you will be glad to have them on hand instead of buying whatever is left at the store.
I do not think a coffee filter needs much praise when it is doing its job right. It just needs to fit, hold, and not change the taste of what you brewed. These do all three, and that is enough for me to keep coming back to them.
